Abstract

|
|
The new oral anticoagulants for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation fall into 2 classes, the direct thrombin inhibitors and direct factor Xa inhibitors. In contrast to vitamin K antagonists, which block the synthesis of multiple vitamin K-dependent coagulation factors (factors II, VII, IX, and X), these drugs block the activation of a single coagulation factor. This review summarizes the new oral anticoagulants and their clinical trials.
